The Mapping Project 2014

Exhibited at The Gallery, St Kilda Town Hall, Melbourne

The Mapping Project is a record of my experience of Veg Out Community Garden in St Kilda, where I had a studio for three years. During my time in this complex and chaotic site I developed many different modes of observing and recording the garden, it’s community and the passage of time.
The site on which Veg Out stands was a wetland prior to colonisation, where the Boon Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation lived and cared for this area according to the rhythms of the seasons. The absence of this culture haunted me throughout my time at Veg Out.
An ongoing series of watercolour drawings and specimens were assembled as two large wall drawings.  Fields 1, made up of specimens from Veg Out Gardens reflects this colonial imprint. Fields 2 contains images of this European influence, highlighting the absence of any indigenous culture.

The publication The Mapping Project is an archive of the major projects undertaken during my time at Veg Out.
