The Walking Project 2015

Exhibited at The Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne

The peninsula of land on which the Abbotsford Convent is located is a palimpsest of walking tracks, both ancient and current. The Walking Project is a contemporary experience of walking this land, and a record of my responses to it. It takes the form of an installation and guided tours of the Convent precinct.
It is ‘...an exploration of the ghosts and voices that haunt ancient paths, of tales that tracks keep and tell.’ (Macfarlane, Robert, The Old Ways, p xi, Hamish Hamilton, Penguin BooksLondon, England, 2012)
The Map is a site responsive, layered document of my walks in the Convent grounds over the past year.

The following images are a component of The Walking Project.

These images are an interpretive amalgam of archival photos of The Convent years 1863 - 1975 and were used on the walking tours to illustrate connections between past and present, and to activate particular sites of past practices, and imprints of former structures.
